The following questions are based on the learning outcomes for the Japanese Major. Please take a moment and reflect how these outcomes have matched your experience in your major classes.

*1. My acquired Japanese language and cultural fluency allows me to promote understanding and respect for peoples of the world, as expressed by the principles in the “Aims of a BYU Education.”
 
*2. My experiences have prepared me to analyze and discuss salient aspects of Japanese thought and its effect on language, behavioral patterns, and interpersonal relationships.
 
*3. I have acquired insights and knowledge that enable me to analyze and discuss Japanese literary genres, works, and authors in their social, historical and religious contexts.
 
*4. I can apply critical thinking skills and write well in English and Japanese in various genres.
 
*5. I am confident conversing and acting in Japanese in linguistically, socially, and culturally appropriate ways on a broad variety of topics in a wide range of settings.
 
*6. I have developed sufficient skills to analyze and discuss the structure of the Japanese language, including aspects of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
 
*7. I am able to read and effectively engage texts of various genres in Japanese covering the range of jooyoo kanji.
 
*8. With the knowledge I have gained, I can discuss basic differences and continuities between modern and pre-modern Japanese.
 
*9. I have acquired the skills necessary to read and analyze pre-modern texts in Japanese.
 
*10. I have learned to use dictionaries (electronic, paper, and web-based) and other cultural literacy resources, such a Kokugo benran.
 
*11. I have acquired the skills necessary for a lifetime of continued learning.
